Sto-Rox Safe Passage - Volunteers Needed

Every student deserves to feel safe on their way home from school.

There is no denying that violence is prevalent in our community. Students in our elementary and high school frequently report being scared while walking between school or the bus stop and home.

There is no easy or quick solution for stopping this violence, but we can help our students and youth feel safe as they go to and from school. We are launching a Safe Passage Corridor with volunteer Safe Passage Observers to watch over our students and keep and eye on the neighborhood as students get to school.

What is a Safe Passage?

A Safe Passage program brings together the school district, local businesses and law enforcement, and community volunteers to create a safe corridor from the various residential neighborhoods to school.

An effective safe passage program, in combination with other anti-violence initiatives, can help students feel safer on their way to school, keep the community more aware, and reduce open violence in public corridors.

What is a Safe Passage Observer?

Safe Passage Observers are adult volunteers placed around the safe passage corridor to watch over the students during their walk, keep an eye out for dangers (contacting law enforcement only if necessary), and help students feel safe as they get home from school. Volunteers may be assigned to walk alongside students in one of our “Walking Bus Routes” or may be posted at an intersection/bus stop to catch students as they pass by.

Training will be provided to all volunteers (at no cost to them) to know how to help with crossings, what signs and signals to look out for, and when to report issues to law enforcement.

Volunteers shifts will be roughly 2 hours (around 2:45 - 4pm), Monday-Friday.

How do I sign up?

Interested volunteers can sign up using the form below. If you have questions or concerns, please contact CISPAC Volunteer and Mentoring Coordinator, Emily Eichner at EEichner@CISPAC.org.
